(Hardcover) Steph Auteri Clean Room Vol. 3: Waiting for the Stars to Fall by Gail Simone, Walter Geovani, Sanya Anwar, and Quinton Winter:  There was a conversation among fellow Book Rioters about spooky comics, and Clean Room came up. I like spooky. I read the first two volumes in one quick gulp through Hoopla, and now I’m on the third. (Ebook) Laura Sackton Independent People by Halldor Laxness: I’ve been obsessed with Iceland ever since I had the chance to travel there last fall. So I’ve decided to work my way through Icelandic literature, starting with Halldor Laxness, the only Icelander ever to win a Nobel prize and beloved in his country. So far, Independent People is a gritty and rather gloomy look at sheep farming in the Icelandic countryside. In other words: awesome. (Audiobook) Elizabeth Allen Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley: I read this for my local indie’s bookgroup. With the exception of The Art of Racing in the Rain, I’ve been kind of over emotional stories about beloved family pets dying. But, like Garth Stein’s book, Rowley finds a completely new and unique way to discuss the painful yet beautiful journey of saying goodbye to a member of your family. He combines stark reality and fabulism to really express what it feels like to live in that stagnant time between knowing your pet will be leaving you soon and actually having to make that final, difficult decision. (Paperback) Priya Sridhar Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Silvia is a wonderful editor, and a storyteller. She takes us to Mexico City, where Atl, a woman with Aztec origins and a need to drink blood, has to go on the lam when a gang targets her. She takes an unwitting donor with her, and starts getting attached to the young Domingo. Meanwhile her pursuers, who also have supernatural roots, contend with a reckless member and the stricter laws that don’t allow for ample feeding. I love this world so much, and the rich language within the prose. (eBook) Jan Rosenberg The Idiot by Elif Batuman: I have heard everyone talking about this book. I listened to a podcast that mentioned a few of the subtle, funny moments that make this book so poignant. Like how Selin can’t decide to answer a classmate when he stops to ask how she is, so she stares at him until he just gives up and walks away. I was on the fence for a while, but I’m halfway through and I love it so much. I want to linger with this book so that it takes longer to finish. Selin is the daughter of Turkish immigrants and has just arrived at Harvard from New Jersey. Harvard is supposed to be a haven for intellectuals, but the students and professors are hilariously lost, and no more confident in themselves than Selin is. Selin is such a fresh, honest, and brave young woman. And I’m pretty sure this book makes an argument for wordplay as foreplay. I may have to check out Batuman’s other novel when I’m finished. (Hardcover) Katie McLain The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino: I found a copy of this at a nearby used book sale, and I keep hearing so many good things about Higashino’s mysteries that I decided to grab it. I’m not far into it, but I can tell already it’s a compelling story. (Paperback) Derek Attig Bearly a Lady by Cassandra Khaw: I was desperately in need of something fun and sparkly and delightful, and so I pounced on this werebear-with-a-vampire-roommate story. I don’t regret it. Not a bit. (ebook) Jess Plummer The Three Lives of James Madison: Genius, Partisan, President by Noah Feldman: I was inspired by Matt Grant’s presidential biography challenge to try working my way through biographies of every US president so far over the next four years. Three and half down, a daunting number to go! (Digital ARC) Jen Sherman I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou: This is one of my books for the Read Harder challenge, which I’m desperately trying to finish in the next six weeks! The book is harder to read than I thought it would be, but as I said to my husband last night, it’s narrated by an African American child living in the American south in the 1930s. It was never going to be a light and fluffy read. (Library paperback) Rebecca Hussey Border: A Journey to the Edge of Europe by Kapka Kassabova: First, this is nonfiction published by Graywolf Press, and that makes it automatically worth checking out. But it’s also a mix of memoir, travel writing, and social/political observations and analysis, a combination of genres I can’t resist. Fifty pages into this exploration of the border areas in Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, I’m finding it fascinating. (Paperback ARC) Adiba Jaigirdar The Mermaid and Mrs  Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar: I’m basically on board for any book that is about mermaids. And this one had mermaids in the title! So far, it’s not exactly what I expected the book to be, but the prose is beautiful and I’m certainly intrigued. (Digital ARC) Jenn Northington Basic Witches by Jaya Saxena and Jess Zimmerman: I picked this up on a whim at BEA, expecting it to be a very silly but fun millennial grimoireâ€"a novelty book, something I might flip through once and then pass along. Readers, I read it cover to cover, and I’m keeping my copy forever. Saxena and Zimmerman do an excellent job of talking about intention setting as ritual, laying out the history of witchesâ€"particularly in the USâ€"and their relationship with feminism, AND of making me laugh out loud with occasional silliness. This book is a gemâ€"get it for you, for your girl gang, and any woman who might be occasionally tempted to hex a catcaller. Jessica Yang The Disappearance of Ember Crow by Ambelin Kwaymullina: I read The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf a while back and loved it, so of course the sequel is on my to-read list! (hardcover) Tasha Brandstatter A Kiss in Lavender by Laura Florand: The latest release by one of my favorite authors. (ebook) Emily Martin All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood: This was my pick for the book club I’m in, and I’m absolutely loving everything about this book. I know that Book of the Month chose it for their book of the year in 2016, and I can see why. This is a very unique book that leaves me feeling conflicted about each and every character. Honestly, I’m nearly finished with the book and I have no idea how it should end or how I should even be rooting for it to end. Whatever happens, I can’t put it down. (hardcover) Susie Rodarme Hunger by Roxane Gay: I have finally started this book. I have been circling it since it came out, trying to be brave enough to read it, or maybe waiting for when I really needed it, which seems to be right now. (Library Hardcover) Margaret Kingsbury We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Um, I’m reading this because it’s short. Okay, so I have more reasons than that, but I’m running behind on my yearly reading goal. At 52 pages, I should be able to finish this tonight in a single sitting. But of course I’m also reading it because I’m a feminist and I want to read it… (Paperback) Trisha Brown Completely by Ruthie Knox: Ruthie Knox is one of the first romance authors whose work I read, and she’s definitely the first whose backlist I immediately sought out and devoured. Going Against Nature with T.C. Boyle Free Essays

We need to understand that nature is a key player in life, and that it has a greater power over us than we do it. We will write a custom essay sample on Going Against Nature with T.C. If nature, such as the weather, decides there’s going to be a storm this weekend, well the best we can do is prepare for it. If nature creates us in one mode, who are we to go against it and try to change our species? If nature decides it’s going to slam a commit into the earth, we are helpless in the matter. Going against nature, or even questioning its methods, has its consequences and the characters of the short stories written by T. C. Boyle seem to know this all too well. Nature is a greater power who demands great respect. It is not a choice in matter, but rather a forced way of life that we have no means to alter, which Boyle convincingly conveys through his stories. In the story â€Å"The Swift Passage of Animals†, T. C. Boyle takes us on a â€Å"big adventure† (91) in which a new relationship is intended to flourish by a romantic weekend getaway. The nature of the male, Zach, is to impress the young recently divorced woman, Ontario. Though they are already dating, he is still courting her in hopes to further impress her by taking her to â€Å"hike the trails and cross-country ski†¦ and then sit at the bar at the lodge till it was time to go to bed†(84), by sharing the experiences with the greatest thing they have in common, their love for nature. Of course, there is more in it for Zach than just enjoying the beauty nature has, he intends on fulfilling the â€Å"unspoken promise percolating beneath the simple monosyllable of her assent—going to bed† (84). Zach is using her love of nature to his fullest advantage. Nature is not something to be taken advantage of, as it is not something to be questioned or controlled. Zach, being the dominate â€Å"risk-taker† (79) that he believes himself to be is about to get a whole new taste of what nature has to offer when take advantage of for personal gain. Though Zach claims that the main reason for their trip is to explore and enjoy their common interest of nature at the Big Timber Lodge it is just a cover for what he really has in mind, which is going to bed with Ontario. T. C. Boyle’s diction throughout the beginning of the story foreshadows this â€Å"unspoken† (84) intention of Zach by placing details such as â€Å"the soft sexy scratch of [her voice] shot from his eardrums right to his crotch† (80), and the reference of her sweater with the â€Å"reindeer prancing across her breasts† (81), he foreshadows the consequences of these provoking thoughts by directly following them with the dangers of the â€Å"sleet† â€Å"dark† (80) road they were on. In showing his dominance and risk taking skills, Zach chooses not to prepare in case they get caught in a storm on the way to the Lodge. He also presses nature even further by choosing to take the back road even though â€Å"there was a winter storm watch out of the Southern Sierras†¦and he knew that [it] would be closed as soon as the first snow hit† (74). All he could think about was getting there as fast as he could. â€Å"He was always in a hurry. Especially tonight. Especially with her† (74). Zach experiences his â€Å"first prick of worry† (81) when he spots a sign that said â€Å"Cars required with Chains† (81). Perversely† (95) nature enhances his worries by letting the snow paint the road with such intensity it was â€Å"as if some cosmic hand had swept on ahead with a two-lane paintbrush† (81). Despite the skidding of the tires and the snow â€Å"coming down as if it wasn’t going to stop till May† (88), Ontario maintains full confidence in Zach. â€Å"She wasn’t staring out the windshield into the white fury of the headlights, but watching h im as if they were cruising down the Coast Highway under a ripe delicate sun† (83). But even with the confidence of his potential mate, his risk taking skills, and attitude nature still manages to turn things around on him when the car skids into a boulder and lands itself in â€Å"a glistening white ditch that undulated gracefully away from the hidden surface of the road† (85). Zach is now completely alone in the nature with Ontario, â€Å"which was where he really and truly wanted to be† (85). However, it is now that all of his unpreparedness becomes apparent. â€Å"He didn’t have a shovel in the truck—no shovel, and no chains† (86). No â€Å"knife† or â€Å"hatchet†, or â€Å"anything to cut with† (87). Nothing of any use to assist them in getting the tires up and out of the ditch. All of their feeble attempts merely gave â€Å"the rear wheels a moment’s purchase† which just resulted in â€Å"[shoving] the front end in deeper† (88). Nature successfully pulls this egotistical, risk taking, prideful, dominant male down â€Å"to feel less a risk taker and more a fool, callow, rash, without foresight of calculation, the sort of blighted ndividual whose genetic infirmities get swallowed up in the food chain before he can reproduce and pass them on to vitiate the species† (86). As nature pulls Zach further and further down, deepening his misery by torrential snow and all the worries that come with leaving your car out in the middle of the wilderness (such as if â€Å"the yahoos come out and strip it† (92) ) in an attempt to hike to the Big Timber Lodge which was still a long â€Å"thirteen miles† (93) away, Ontario is â€Å"inordinately cheerful† (91). But â€Å"given how miserable [Zach] was† (91) because of the crash, he was able to pull the optimistic outlook of Ontario down to his pessimistic level. By the end of their hike, Zach finds himself grouped into â€Å"the unlucky and unprepared† (95) people which nature tackles with full force. His trip was ruined, as well as his time with Ontario. Boyle" in category "Papers" When they finally reach the lodge, after being rescued from the cold by â€Å"the man in the goggles†(96) on a â€Å"snowmobile† (96), Ontario corrects Zachs request of a room to â€Å"two rooms† (98). In â€Å"Dogology† T. C. Boyle introduces us to Cynthia, or â€Å"C. f. , Captial C, lowercase f† (44) as she prefers to be called. She is a young woman who has finished grad school and attempting to â€Å"challenge† (35) the misconceptions people have about dogs. The world views dogs as â€Å"beneath them†¦ common, pedestrian, no more exotic than the housefly or the Norway rat† (35). C. f. was obsessed with changing the worlds view of dogs despite the fact that â€Å"the graduate committee rejected her thesis† (35). Humans have domesticated dogs. This results in two types of dogs: the wild and the domesticated. Cynthia challenges the methods of nature, by trying to change herself into a member of the pack. She committed herself to doing things as the pack would, â€Å"made a point of wearing the same things continuously for weeks on end†¦ in the expectation that her scent would invest them, and the scent of the pack too† (40). She â€Å"[hoped] to gain their confidence† (40) by smelling like them, running with them â€Å"reminding herself to always keep her head down and go quadrupedal whenever possible† (35) this was how she was going to â€Å"hear, smell and see as the dogs did† (35). Nature did not intend for Cynthia to take on the life of the dog. She was born human, and yet â€Å"what she was doing, or attempting to do, was nothing short of reordering her senses so that she could think like a dog and interpret the whole world—not just the human world—as dogs did† (35). Cynthia is exposed to the consequences of challenging nature by converting yourself to a different species of the world. Though married, Cynthia commits her days to accomplishing â€Å"the rhythm of dogdom† (40), ignoring the needs and the wants of her husband. She throws her â€Å"neighborhood into an uproar† (41) to the point where â€Å"they’re going to have her committed† (51). Her husband â€Å"locked her out† (50) of the house, leaving her to be with the dogs after a confrontation in which â€Å"he’d kicked her† (49) out of the frustration of her â€Å"research†(49) which he plainly saw as â€Å"bullshit† (49). â€Å"He wanted her back home, back in the den, and that was his right† (49), however Cynthia had other ambitions. Truly, she was accomplished being â€Å"left alone†(49) to enjoy â€Å"the unalloyed sweetness in life† where â€Å"the sun blessed† her body as she lay â€Å"streched out† among the pack. However, to the average citizen it may seem all a bit too costly to sacrifice the lives we live and relationships we have all for an understanding of something so â€Å"common† (35). In â€Å"Chicxulub† we are faced with the worst scenario a parent can imagine; a late night phone call, when we least expect it, stating â€Å"there has been an accident† (135) involving our own daughter, or in this story their daughter, â€Å"Madeline Biehn of 1337 Laurel Drive† (135). We are rushed through a flury of emotions while paralleling the catastrophic events of â€Å"Tunguska† (133) and â€Å"Chicxulub† (136), a â€Å"meteor† (133) and â€Å"asteroid† (136) that had impact with the Earth with such force that they were able to flatten â€Å"seven hundred square miles of Siberian forest† (133) and make â€Å"at least seventy-five percent of all known species extinguished† (136). The most recent of the two, â€Å"Tunguska† (133) was â€Å"nearly a hundred years ago† (133). No one was expecting it, as no one expects a phone call in the middle of the night saying your child has been in a car accident. It seems nature has an awful need to demonstrate its authority every now and again, reminding us â€Å"that we, and all our works and worries and attachments, are so utterly inconsequential† (139). The chances of these catastrophic events are rare; they are about as likely as â€Å"dying in an auto accident in the next ten months†, however they are not unheard of. There is nothing we can do if one of these events were to take place in our lifetime. It doesn’t matter if you spend your life preparing for such a catastrophic event, such as the most recent dooms day preparers, or you buy your daughter â€Å"a Honda Civic, the safest thing on four wheels† (134). If nature has a plan it will enact and follow through with its intentions. In fact the narrator clearly states his â€Å"point. You’d better get down on your knees and pray to your gods because each year this big spinning globe we ride intersects the orbits of some twenty million asteroids† (134). Sometimes, nature â€Å"perversely† (95) likes to hand out wake up calls. We find out after â€Å"the slow striptease of death† (142) as â€Å"the sheet draws back† (142) from the gurney where the supposed dead Madeline is to be, that their â€Å"daughter is not in the hospital† (143). Their daughter is exactly where she is supposed to be â€Å"asleep in her room† (143). It was a mistaken identity because Madeline â€Å"[loaned] her ID to her second-best friend, Kristi Cherwin† (143). The narrator of the story, â€Å"rushing still with the euphoria† realizes that this is not his daughter, and in fact not the â€Å"Chicxulub† of his lifetime. However he is left with a renewed perspective that â€Å"the rock is coming, the new Chicxulub, hurtling through the dark and the cold to remake our fate† (144). So it is through the stories that we have a renewed sense that nature is much more than a companion in life. Much more than just the flowers, and trees we pass by as we are â€Å"cruising down the Coast Highway under a ripe delicate sun† (83), much more powerful than our tactics of prevention such as our â€Å"Honda Civic† (134), or our will to undue to the simplification of our domesticated house pets. Nature has created the ways that we live in today. We are merely the players on its game board, â€Å"inconsequential† (139), insignificant. Police corruption is probably the most common ethic deviance in a police department. Corruption occurs when police abuse their authority for personal gain. Often time’s officers receive payments in order to look the other way when it comes to certain crimes. These payments are not just money payments but also come as personal favors, gratuities, and bribes. Police corruption may also include framing a suspect to maybe divert attention from another suspect they are helping. There are two different types of corruption, internal and external. Internal corruption is the illegal acts and agreements within a police department by more than one officer. External corruption is the illegal acts and agreements with the public by one or more officers in a department. There are three distinct elements of police corruption that have to occur simultaneously for a corrupt act to occur: 1) misuse of authority, 2) misuse of official capacity, and 3) misuse of personal attainment. The external corruption generally consists of one or more of the following activities: 1) payoffs to police by essentially non-criminal elements which fail to comply with stringent statutes or city ordinances, 2) payoffs to police by individuals who continually violate the law as a method of making money and, 3) clean graft where money is paid to police for services, or where courtesy discounts are given as a matter, of course to the, police. General police deviance can include discrimination, sexual harassment, intimidation, brutality, and illicit use of weapons. However, it is not particularly obvious where brutality, discrimination, and misconduct end and corruption begins. (2002, December) Police misconduct happens as a result of police corruption. Types of misconduct include: false confessions, false arrest, falsified evidence, false imprisonment, intimidation, police brutality, police corruption, political repression, racial profiling, sexual abuse, and surveillance abuse. Police misconduct also includes accepting bribes, improper search and seizures, harassment and racism in law enforcement. Police misconduct violates the oath of peace officers and their responsibilities as public servants. Victims of police misconduct can be wrongfully accused and convicted of crimes they did not even commit. Police misconduct also creates distrust between police and the public that they are meant to serve and protect. Police misconduct often goes uncorrected because people are not aware or understand their rights as citizens. Informed citizens can prevent police misconduct and avert violence, wrongful convictions, and abuse of authority. A study showed that most citizens complained against police officers because of the use of profanity and abusive language towards them, the use of commands to move on or get home, stopping and questioning people on the street or search ing them and their cars without probable cause, the use of threats to use force if not obeyed, prodding with a nightstick or approaching with a pistol, and actual use of physical force or violence itself for no reason at all. Police brutality causes a lack of communication between minority groups and the police department and a lack of trust because of previous run-ins with brutality. In some cases police brutality runs over into an officer’s personal life as well. There have been several cases where an officer is arrested due to domestic violence and leads to an investigation of their work life. They were my soul teachers on what was and what was not ethical. Then one brisk fall day my tiny right foot hit the bus steps and I was off to my first day of school. It was in this one isolated incident in wh Beginning from birth until I was about five years old the only source that my five-year ich my brain began to fog up from the entire worlds views on ethics. Basically in the fraction of a second that it took my foot to make contact with the rubber stuff on the bus steps, I became perpetually confused as to what was right and what was wrong. As I made my way down the aisle of the bus I found a seat with a very scruffy little kid (Danny McCormick), whom would soon become my partner in crime. This was my best bud back in the day when days lasted weeks and weeks lasted years. Now being an extremely shy child I was his lackey, he said jump and I responded how high? We were that children who always had to sit on the wall during recess for throwing dirt at little Billy or for teasing little Susie about her stupid pink bow. To this day the smell of Windex will send me straight back to the days of cleaning the chalkboard and the desks during recess. Also we were the well-published chalkboard names with the vivacious yellow check mark strategically placed directly following. The two of us could be found at any given time together and probably causing trouble. So my best bud until about fourth grade basically taught me to be a little punk. Which totally went against everything my parents had taught me. Here is where I need to flashback to fill you in on my parent's background and what they had taught me until I started attending school. My parents are the basic run of the mile middle class parents. They are not: drug addicts, alcoholics, quick-tempered, violent, or in any way emotionally scaring. To sum it up my parents are the Huxtable's without all the sappy make you want to vomit scenes. They had always grilled a sense of love everyone, treat others the way you want to be treated view into my head. So meeting my little scruffy Danny was something extremely new and exciting to me. He taught me it could be fun to get in trouble, my parents of course thought otherwise and would try at all lengths to keep us apart. This was like trying to keep Bert away from Ernie. During the summer before fourth-grade Danny and his family moved to the upper- peninsula and we lost contact after about five years of what seemed like an everlasting friendship. I'm sure my parents were pained to see me hurt by the whole ordeal of losing my best buddy, but I also believe that they jumped for joy internally when he left in his parents beat-up old station wagon that day lost so long ago. The memory lives on and what he taught me will always be apart of what I hold ethical. Upon returning to school in the fall of the fourth grade I found myself surrounded by all the familiar faces minus one. I realized all these kids were the ones that we had tormented for so many years, why would they ever speak to me. So for a few days I basically kept to myself, went back to being really shy and I spoke to no one. My whole personality had changed into something these kids had never seen; I was not being a little bad ass. And one day a little curly-headed girl, (Heather Ross), whom we had repeatedly tormented, approached me and asked me to come over to her house and play and I did. This was the beginning of my second most beautiful friendship. Heather and I would do everything together just as Danny and I had, but this relationship was quite different. The 3 Types of ACT Science Passages What You Must Know SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The ACT Science section is one of the bigger mysteries to students since it is the most different from the SAT, PSAT, and other tests you have taken. Here, I will try to unravel the mystery by explaining the types of passages on the ACT, as well as the unique question types for each of these passages. By the end of thisarticle, you will have a clear understanding of what the ACT Science section entails and how to best prepare for it. The 3 Types of ACT Science Passages There are always either six or seven passages in the ACT Science section, split among a few types. Here is the overview of the types of the three questions you'll find: 2-3 Data Representation Passages 5 or 6 questions per passage 2-3 Research Summaries Passages 5 or 6 questions per passage 1 Conflicting Viewpoints Passage 7 questions per passage I will delve into more detail on the specifics of each type below. Each passage type also has uniquetypes of questions, all requiring their own approaches. Passage Type 1: Data Representation Passages These passages are similar to those found in science journals and texts. They present you with a short paragraph or two as well asone to fourvisual representations of data (such as graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots). The passages will mention specific studies and label sections as Study 1, Study 2, and Study 3. Here is a sample passage from an ACT practice test: Each Data Representation Passage has 5 or 6 questions. In thePrepScholarACT Program, we categorize the questions for Data Representation into three categories (not everyone categorizes them the same way). Understanding these three categories is key to figuring out how to answer each question correctly, so let's take a closer look at the three question types below. Question Type 1: Factual Questions These questions simply ask you to relay factual information that is presented in the passage. To answer these questions, you need to read the graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots. You'll also need to pull out specificdata points from the passage without making further calculations or inferences. The key here is to read carefully and be able to pick out and understand factual information. For instance, here's an example from the above passage: As you can see, as long as you understand how to read graphs, you should be able to answer this question easily. There may also be more advanced versions of these questions in which you are asked to look at a weirdgraph. They can look pretty intimidating at first. Check out the "weird" graph below: Is that English? I don't understand. The trick to tackling a crazy-looking chart is reading the questionand the answerscarefully. It will give you an idea about what information matters...and what information doesn't. Question Type 2:Interpreting Trends Questions These questions ask you toevaluate graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots to decide if there is a relationship.Is it increasing or decreasing? Is there an inverse relationship or direct relationship? Here is an example from the above passage: There may be more advanced versions of these questions in which there is no clear relationship between the data points. At that point, you'll have to make educated, scientific inferences from the information you've given. Question Type 3:Calculations Questions These questions ask you to take what is given and figure out where it is going.Given the data, what might Y be at value X? The questions ask you to make extrapolations and interpolations. Here is an example related to the below passage: Like we mentioned above, these types of questions ask you to draw conclusions from the data you've been given. Passage Type 2: Research Summaries Passages These passages look similar to the Data Representation Passages in that they usually present you with a short paragraph or two plus visuals (graphs, tables, scatterplots, or images). The difference is that Research SummariesPassages focus on a specific experiment or a couple of experiments. The passages will usually label sections as Experiment 1, Experiment 2, and Experiment 3. Often, they'llmention a scientist or student who is conducting the experiment.There may also be an image of how the experiments are set up. Below is an example of a Research Summaries Passage: Notice how unlike the Type 1 Data Representation passages above, Type 2 Research Summary passages mention specific experiments. Each Research SummariesPassage has 5 or 6 questions.The types of questions they ask are also very different from Type 1 Data Representation passages.Let's take a look at these new question types in a little more depth. Question Type 4: Experimental Design/Researcher Intent Questions These questions ask you to determine why the researcher designed the experiment a certain way. What arethe controls and variables in the experiment? What is the hypothesis on which the experiment is based? Here is an example from the above passage: Question Type 5: Hypothetical ExperimentalQuestions These questions askyou to determine what would happen if there was a change in the experiment (in the temperature, solution, etc.). They often require you to understand the trend of the data to predict how the outcome would change if the experiment were changed. Here is an example from the above passage: Question Type 6: Interpreting Experiments Questions These questions ask you interpret the information that you are given. Based on the data shown, is this statement supported?These questions are often framed in a 2x2 matrix: Yes because A, Yes because B, No because A, No because B. Here is an example from the above passage Break for Strategies: Data Representation and Research Summaries Passages Data Representation and Research Summaries are similar in that both rely primarily on the visuals (graphs, tables, etc.) to relay information.You can use the same strategy for both passages. It's easier than chess. Trust me. Strategy: Go straight to the questions without reading.Try to answer all of the questions using only the visuals. Manystudents get bogged down in reading the science passage. There are dozens of data points to consider, and most of them won't have any questions about them. So you'll end up wasting time trying to understand data that really aren't important. Instead,try to answer questions without reading the passage. This lets you avoid wasting too much time understanding parts of the passage that aren't important. Let’s use the very first question from the Data Representation section as an example. It is okay if you don’t immediately understand what finches are or what beak depth means (since you haven’t read the passage). After reading that question, you should jump to Figure 2, the visual associated with Study 1. I can ignore the top chart, since it says "percent of captured finches from Island A" in the y-axis, and I only need to compare the beak depth for percent of captured finches from Island B and C (and I see Island B and C are on the y-axis for the middle and bottom charts, respectively). Starting with the bottom chart, I see the highest percent of finches captured from Island C was around 35%, if I follow that bar down to the x-axis, I see that the corresponding beak depth was 10 mm. I am now pretty sure the answer is D since that is the only answer choice which says the beak depth is 10 mm for Island C finches. I will check the Island B finch chart to be sure. Looking at the middle chart, I see the highest percent is about 33%, if I follow that bar down to the x-axis, I see the corresponding beak depth is 10 mm. Now, I know for sure the answer is D! Sometimes, this method of answering questions will require a little inference and/or your deduction skills, so it may not work for everyone on every question. Let’s take for example the last question from the Research Summaries section above: It is okay if you don’t immediately understand what the words "titrant" or "sample solution" mean (since you haven’t read the passage).After reading that question, you should jump to Figure 2, the visual associated with Experiment 2. Then, check out the pH color and conductivity at 0.2 mL of titrant added.Even if I don’t know what titrant is (because I didn’t read the passage), I can see that volume of titrant added is on the x-axis.Following the x-axis to 0.2 ml of titrant added, I find the conductivity is less than 0.5 kS/cm (it is okay if I don’t understand the unit measurement). Based on the heavily dotted line, according to the key, the color is yellow. Already with this information alone, I could go ahead and eliminate answer choices B and Dsince both say the color is blue at 0.2 ml of titrant added.I will double check by finding the conductivity and color at 1.8 ml of titrant added. Using the graph, I see the conductivity is between 2.5 and 3 kS/cm. Based on the wider spaced line, according to the key, the color is blue. So yes, I was correct to eliminate B and D. I now have to choose between A and C. At this point, I need to use a little deduction if I choose not to read/skim the passage.The question is asking whether the pH is greater at 0.2 ml than at 1.8 ml of titrant added.Well, I know the conductivity is less at 0.2 ml than at 1.8 ml, but as far as pH I only know the color and don’t know what the colors mean. I know from my previous knowledge that pH and conductivity are directly related.So as one increases, so does the other. Side note: I actually did a science fair experiment in middle school testing the differing conductivity of acidic fruit based on their pH levels. No, I did not get to meet Barack Obama. So, I am going to pick answer A since no, the pH is less at 0.2 ml of titrant added than at 1.8 ml of titrant added.If you skim the passage, you will find that yellow color signifies pH less than 6 and blue color signifies pH greater than 7, so my assumption was correct. While not everyone may be able to make that second leap, you can definitely take the first step to eliminate B and E. Then, you only needed to skim to find out what yellow and blue mean in terms of pH in order to pick the correct answer. For the questions you can't answer with visuals, circle them and returnto them later. Prevalence of Traumatic Injuries to Anterior Teeth Medident Prevalence of traumatic injuries TO ANTERIOR TEETH IN CHILDREN AGED 8-12 YEARS IN KANPUR CITY Abstract: Aims: This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence, causes and anatomical risk factors of traumatic injuries to anterior teeth among the 8 to 12 years old school going children in Kanpur city, India. Material Methods: The sample size included 2913 school children aged 8 to 12years from 30 both private and government schools. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw the sample. To record teeth injuries; the classification of Ellis (Ellis et al 1970), as modified by Holland (Holland et al 1988) was used. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out in the present study. Chi-Square Test and Z-test for a proportion (Binomial distribution) was used during statistical analysis. P values P à ¯Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ £ 0.05were considered statistically significant. Results: The study shows prevalence of 10.57% of traumatic injuries to anterior teeth among 8-12 years old school going children (prevalence of 8.25% at the age of 8 years which reached to 14.12%% at the age of 12 years). Boys were more involved (14%) than girls (6.7%). The maxillary central incisors (89.29%) were the most affected teeth followed by the lateral incisors (6.82%). Fractures involving only enamel (79.87%) were the most frequent type of traumatic dental injuries. Falls (46.75%) were the most frequent cause of trauma followed by collisions (7.14%).Traumatic Dental Incisors were more prevalent among those with overjet >3.5mm and inadequate lip coverage. Conclusion: Children being male and having an overjet >3.5 mm inadequate lip coveragewere associated with a higher probability of having a traumatized tooth. They have an unfavorable social and psychological impact on the quality of life of children and adolescents when they do not receive adequate treatment. The result from the fact that it mainly affects the anterior teeth, causing physical and psychological discomfort, pain, loss of function of mastication and phonation, decreased self esteem and embarrassment when smiling, therefore has a direct impact on the social life of affected individuals1. Dental trauma is associated with several etiological and risk factors. Data from dental clinics and hospital based studies have shown that falls, collisions, sports activities, traffic accidents and high levels of violence are the main etiological factors2. Epidemiological studies reveal that one out of two children sustains a dental injury, most often between the ages of 8 and 12 3. Despite its importance, there are few reports available on the epidemiology of injuries to the teeth of children in developing and industrialized countries, in particular when compared to epidemiological data on dental caries and periodontal diseases4. The prevalence of traumatic dental injuries amongst school going children in different parts of the world varies from a low 2.6 (Macko et al 5) to a high of 43.8 % (Marcenes and Murray6). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate prevalence, causes and the anatomic risk factors of the traumatic injuries to anterior teeth among 8 12 years old school going children in Kanpur city. Material Methods: Ethical approval: The study was approved by the ethical committee of the Rama Dental College, Hospital Research Centre. The examinations were conducted with permission from the education authorities and head teachers and the informed consent of the children’s parents. Study group: Three thousand school children between the age group of 8-12 years were randomly selected from both the Government and Private schools of Kanpur were initially examined. Eighty seven children were excluded from the study because they had a history of or were currently receiving orthodontic treatment. Thus the total number of children included in this study was 2913. Data was collected by an interview and oral examination. A Performa was prepared to collect data during oral examination and brief face-to-face interview. A single examiner trained and calibrated for the criteria used, conducted both the interview of the parents and the clinical examination of the children. The children were examined at their schools under natural light. Children who participated in the study were examined at the schools during school hours, in a predetermined timetable, as arranged with the school authorities. Data collected during the interview: Time of the accident: Type of accident Place of accident. Data collected during Clinical Examination: To record teeth injuries, the classification of Ellis7, as modified by Holland et al.8 was used: Class 1: Fracture of enamel only. Class 2: Fracture of enamel and dentine; without pulp involvement. Class 3: Fracture of enamel and dentine; with pulp involvement. Class 4: Discoloration of the tooth, with or without a sinus. Class 5: Displacement; extrusion, intrusion, and lateral displacement. Class 6: Tooth loss as a result of trauma. Class 7: Tooth restored by composite or crown following fracture. At the time of survey the soft tissue injuries were not always recorded. In addition, vitality tests and radiographic examinations were not carried out; therefore, root factures were not recorded. Endodontic treatment could not be recorded, and endodontic treatment needs were calculated based on the presence of discoloration, fistulous tract and fracture with pulp exposure. The horizontal relation of the incisors was measured with a CPITN periodontal probe. The measurement was done holding the CPITN periodontal probe parallel to the occlusal plane. The children were separated into two groups according to overjet of less than 3.5mm and 3.5mm or more than 3.5mm. Incisal overjet was not recorded where there was a loss of upper incisors or if a lingual cross bite was present. To record lip pattern, each child was instructed to stand in a specified position and the lip line carefully observed. If in the rest position, the incisors were covered completely by the lips, the lip coverage was scored adequate; otherwise an inadequate score was recorded. Results: Table 1 shows the number and proportion of children who had at least one traumatized permanent anterior teeth. Table 1: The number and proportion of children with traumatized anterior teeth Discussion: The prevalence of trauma to anterior teeth in this study (10.57%) corroborates the assertion that dental injuries among children frequently present between 10% and 20% (Dearing et al9, 1984). The fact that in this study, boys had suffered more traumatic dental injuries than girls (boys-53.14%, girls-46.86%) is basically explained by behavioral or even cultural factors, in that boys engage in leisure activities or sports of generally more aggressive nature or with a greater accident risk than girls do. This research agrees with most other studies that show higher incidence of trauma in males10-14. However, few authors have shown similar trauma in boys and girls15, 16. The most common cause of traumatic dental injuries, observed in this present study was falls. The difficulty of grouping falls as a cause of trauma was reported in 1970. In the present study, the children that suffered dental trauma were asked about the causes of fall for the purpose of distinguishing falls without pushing from the ones in which the individual was pushed, which were grouped in the ‘violence’ category, because they represent a form of aggression. The percentage of schoolchildren that did not remember the accident was also high, which could result in the under reporting of violent incidents. The school going children examined, suffered trauma mostly at home and on the streets. Thus the discussion about healthy environments becomes highly relevant, because environment and health are interdependent and non-separable. Therefore, every place, appraised as alive territory, where exists a relation between children and nature (family, work relationship, leisure, education), are environments that must be favorable to health17. Maxillary central incisors (89.29%) were the most commonly involved teeth during dental trauma than other anterior teeth because of their morphology and location which makes them more susceptible to traumatic injuries18. The result agrees with the findings of Chen et al10(77%), caliskan Turkun14(66.2%), Zaragoza et al19.(87.9%), Zermancavarella12(80%) and Borssen Holm20(67%). Fractures involving only enamel (79.87%) were the most frequent type of traumatic dental injuries observed in our study sample, agreeing with other studies22-24. Vernier calipers provide an accurate measurement of overjet under ideal conditions. However, since the study was carried out under field circumstances CPI style periodontal probe was used to measure overjet as it was more feasible. In relation to overjet, different authors have argued over which particular value should be regarded as an increased overjet or not. Thus, some recognize an increased overjet when the value is more than 3 mm, and others when it is more than 5 mm. Normal overjet was considered to be in the range of 0-3.5mm9. The CPITN probe served the need, since its markings were located at 3.5 and 5.5mm which facilitated the grouping of the children into ranges of 3.5mm. In our study we found that the risk trauma increased as the overjet increased, the finding was similar to various previous studies25-27. Traumatic dental injuries are also associated with normal function deviation and position of perioral tissues. As was seen in several previous studied29-32, it was observed in the present study that the schoolchildren that presented inadequate lip coverage showed a statistically significant association between the presence of this condition and the occurrence of dental trauma. This can be explained by reduction of cushioning effect in presence of incompetent lips. This study showed that 92.21% of children with dental trauma remained untreated and thus there was a need of dental treatment in 92.21% of children with dental trauma. The reasons for such neglect are unclear. One could suggest that in developing countries, the majority of the population cannot afford private dental treatment and the dental public services are unable to offer more complex treatments. Nevertheless, high levels of untreated traumatized teeth were found in developed countries as well, such as the UK where quality public dental services are accessible to the majority of the population. One factor that could be determining low rates of treatment is related to the fact that traumatic dental injuries is not a disease and parents might not pay the necessary attention to it. This could be related to the severity of the dental injury. As the majority of traumatic dental injuries affect only the enamel this could have a lower potential to produce a negative impact on children a nd their parents. Another aspect that could be enhancing the treatment neglect is the dentist’s lack of knowledge regarding the treatment of dental trauma, both in developed and in developing countries17. In conclusion, the dental injuries are frequently occurring during the different stages of life but they are particularly common in childhood. Although dental injuries are rarely life-threatening, they are of public health importance due to their high prevalence and impact on individuals and society in terms of pain, discomfort, social and functional limitation and handicap, and the effect on the child’s quality of life. Thus, there is need to create dental awareness through dental health education amongst school going children to improve their quality of life. Furthermore traumatic dental injuries are preventable; therefore public health preventive and promotive programmes should be encouraged to reduce the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries in school going children. Health promotion policies should aim to create an appropriate and safe environment. Soft playground surfaces, school-crossing patrols, marked zebra crossings and bicycle lanes would help create a safe environment. The use of seat belts, air bags, special car seats for children and bicycle helmets should be enforced. Mouth guards should be used when playing sports, in particular contact sports. Public Health Education regarding the epidemiology of dental injuries and its prevention through health promotion may play a major role in reducing the prevalence of traumatic dental injury and avoiding the financial costs of treatment, especially in developing countries.

Greek Life: the Negative College Experience

Most people do not have the ability to think of college without thinking of some sort of Greek life organization. Whether that thought is negative or positive may vary, but it is rare to think of any time in a college of any sort without thinking of a fraternity or a sorority at all. This is to be expected because most of these groups have somewhat dominated their campuses for hundreds of years, or since their particular chapters were formed.Supporters of Greek life, especially of fraternities, argue that being involved in Greek life organizations encourages brotherhood, the development of leadership skills, and the participation in philanthropic organizations throughout the students’ collegiate career. The bonds of brotherhood within fraternities have proven to be some of the strongest bonds among young men across the country. When it comes to supporting each other, it appears th at the young men of collegiate fraternities are masters in the field.Whatever problems are faced by one brother can easily be backed up or even repaired completely by another, and the massive amount of time that the members are required to spend with each other due to meetings or rituals or any other function for the particular fraternity does nothing but strengthen the bond that was already set by initiation into the group. It is rare among college campuses, especially at Sam Houston State University, to see a member of a fraternity walking alone or spending any amount of downtime doing anything but socializing with the other members of their organization.This type of bonding can most certainly be considered to be a very positive aspect of participating in a fraternity, especially when the ability build relationships and work together as members of a team is one of the main concepts behind the organizations in the first place. These organizations may seem harmless enough in the set tings that are viewed by the public, but if a closer look is taken at specific time periods of brotherhood, especially pledgeship for the newest members of the fraternity, it is obvious that these groups are anything but innocuous.There have been many reports of underage binge drinking at the parties for all different fraternities and requirements of the pledges to consume extremely large and ultimately unsafe amounts of alcohol, all in the hopes of acceptance into the organization and done out of fear of rejection. For example, it has been observed for many years that the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Sam Houston State University requires their pledges to finish an entire handle of Jagermeister liquor among themselves within a small window of time, and if they fail to do it properly, they are handed a new bottle and forced to start again.This activity is done on Bid Day, the very first day that the young men announce their desire to join the fraternity. Another example of this ty pe of encouragement of binge drinking would be the two deaths of the pledges of completely different fraternities and two different college campuses during 1997. The first, Scott Krueger, an â€Å"18-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology freshman honors student† who died after a party that was thrown off-campus by the â€Å"Phi Gamma Delta fraternity† that Krueger was in the process of pledging (Scrivo 1). His blood alcohol level was a determined to be a â€Å". 1,† which is â€Å"more than five times the legal limit† (Scrivo 1). The second is Benjamin Wynne, a pledge of the â€Å"Sigma Alpha Epsilon† fraternity at Louisiana State University (Scrivo 1). His blood alcohol level after death was reported to be â€Å". 58,† a level that is â€Å"nearly six times the legal limit† (Scrivo 1). This type of strict enforcement and fear of rejection by the pledges must be taken into account when discussing what constitutes â€Å"broth erhood. † The definition of the word itself is â€Å"the feeling of kinship with and closeness to a group of people or all people. One could easily question how the requirement of new members to binge drink to the point of alcohol poisoning or potentially even death equates what is described so often as â€Å"brotherhood. † Another aspect that must be taken into consideration when defining â€Å"brotherhood† is the racial profiling that has gone into choosing and accepting members into fraternities in the past and how it has translated into today. Many different fraternities were originally founded as specifically one race organizations, such as â€Å"Pi Kappa Alpha,† which was rimarily an â€Å"all-white fraternity† (Black, White 1). Now, there are laws set into place that prohibit â€Å"membership bias and exclusion based upon race† in both United States educational institutions as well as in the â€Å"corresponding fraternities and soror ities† of the institutions, but this brings up the question of whether or not the organizations would be any different in modern times than they were when originally founded (Black, White 1). Are these organizations only accepting racially different members because they are required to by law?This question is very difficult to answer, but is something to consider once again when determining whether or not the term â€Å"brotherhood† is used genuinely or if it should be replaced by something a little more truthful: forced acceptance. Focusing again on the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and their lack of true brotherhood, there was a reported case of a student member of the PKA fraternity at the University of Tennessee being sent to the hospital during the month of September, 2012, with a blood alcohol level â€Å"well over a . ,† induced by the alcohol ingesting practice called â€Å"butt chugging† (Jacobs 1). This practice is more formally known as an â€Å"al cohol enema† and is essentially when an individual ingests alcohol into his or her system through the rectum, where it is then directly absorbed in the intestines (Jacobs 1). By consuming mass amounts of alcohol in this manner, the effects of the liquor â€Å"come quickly and potently† and are extremely dangerous for the individual partaking in the practice (Jacobs 1).Also, when members of this particular fraternity are asked about their experiences in the organization so far, all of their answers are overwhelmingly positive and many of them wholeheartedly support the claim that there is absolutely no negative aspect that comes with being involved in a Greek organization. How can a situation so incredibly terrible for the members such as the one that occurred at the University of Tennessee be encourage among the members and still be seen as â€Å"positive† in any way?Anyone with any amount logic or concern for the young men who join these organizations must take situations like this one into account when deciding on whether or not these groups are a positive aspect of the collegiate experience. Although all fraternities across the country are run in different manners and have different sets of rules that, all of them have some sort of executive board or positions that are deemed the leaders of the organization.They tend to have jobs, such as running the meetings, managing the money for the fraternity, filling out necessary paperwork for every different type of function, or taking care of matters of law breaking within the fraternity. Holding this type of position is considered to be prestigious because it means that that particular member is an excellent example of leadership towards their peers, and by being voted into a position of executive power, these leadership qualities are refined by the work required of that position.Refining leadership qualities can be used later on in life in the setting of the adult work environment, which can u ltimately lead to better paying jobs and a more impressive, well-respected position in life. Again, this is a nice enough concept, but not necessarily as true as it seems if examined in the actual fraternities.Personal interviews with the members of Tau Kappa Epsilon at Sam Houston State University have revealed that even though a member is elected into position by his peers, his position is not necessarily respected, especially if the elected member is young in both age and amount of years they have been involved in the organization. The amount of time that a member spends within the fraternity ultimately equals the amount of power he holds in comparison to his peers, and according to the members of the TKE fraternity, this type of power tends to overrule the executive position holders regardless of the title that they may hold.This type of thought process will not always be functional or acceptable out in the workforce of the country, and many times if executive position rulings a re ignored, the result is a loss of a job or even jail time. If the development of leadership skills is supposed to be a positive aspect of Greek life, then the type of leadership qualities and the acceptance of them should be modified to reflect more real world attributes. Another positive feature of Greek life is that each organization has a particular philanthropy that they participate in and donate funds to every year.This annual participation with so many different organization is in fact one of the most positive aspects that all Greek life organizations have to offer, especially because of all the constructive repercussions that occur because of it. Not only do the fraternities and sororities donate to their particular philanthropic organizations unrelentingly, but they also raise awareness about the many different types of charity groups in the surrounding communities and in the world altogether among the other students of the universities.Each Greek life organization usually has a minimum time span, usually a week or a month, where they try to recruit the help of the students around the university in supporting their particular charity. By having a particular time span, such as â€Å"Movember† for the Delta Tau Delta fraternity which encompasses the whole month of November every year and encourages male students across campus to not shave their facial hair in order to raise awareness about testicular cancer, the organizations are able to plan events and different types of advertising in order to maximize the amount of awareness about their patronage.With all of these differing types of events for the philanthropic organizations, it truly helps to make such types of charitable work more approachable and even more exciting to an entirely new group of unknowing people, such as the non-Greek affiliated students on the campus.It would seem that fraternities and sororities helping out with charitable organizations would be somewhat difficult to underm ine and find any negative aspect with, but it most certainly is not that difficult when you consider that most of the Greek life establishments are only participating with these charities because they are forced to by University rule. If the Greek groups were not required by their Universities to participate in at least one philanthropic event every year, it presents the question of whether or not these groups are participating with pure intentions, or if they are only doing it because they are forced to.Something that should also be taken into consideration when comparing the positive aspects against the negative ones is again whether these patronage events are done with purely wholesome intentions of helping out the less fortunate, or if these events are done simply to add on to their future resumes in the hopes of again increasing their potential for better job opportunities.On the surface, it appears that fraternities and Greek life organizations as a whole have many positive as pects, until further inspected and genuinely analyzed. When the majority of an organization’s positive features are required by law or chapter by-laws and the members willingly participating in such dangerous or negative activities, the question of how constructive the organization truly is comes into context and has the ability to destroy any positive reputation that the establishment had to offer in the first place.If the laws and by-laws monitoring and ruling the fraternities were made stronger, or if more people spoke out about all of the negative aspects of the organizations in a more public manner, then the opportunity for such harmful results to come out of such groups that play such a major role in the collegiate experience could be greatly reduced or eliminated overall.
